Rocky Mountain Zen
Rocky Mountain Zen was founded in 2021 in Edmonton and Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Rocky Mountain Zen primarily practices Japanese Soto Zen Buddhism and seeks alignment with the Soto Zen North America Office.
Gyokei Yokoyama is the Guiding Teacher of Rocky Mountain Zen. Yokoyama Sensei is presently a secretary with the Soto Zen North America Office, a member of the Board of SZBA, and is the Abbot of Sozenji Temple in Montebello, California, USA.
Friendship Agreements and Affiliated Communities
Rocky Mountain Zen has established a committee of its Board of Directors with a mandate to develop formal relationships with other Zen communities in Alberta, and beyond. The Committee works to establish "Friendship Agreements" which are agreed to by both communities, and which outline the details of their relationship. In some cases, the communities simply agree to a formalized friendship. In other cases, they agree to practice together, share resources, visit each other's communities, and exchange delegates.
